Sessions

The visit, exactly as it happened

Numbers tell you that people leave. A recording tells you why. Whence keeps the film of every visit and lets you open it from any number on the screen.

A visit replayed up to checkout: payment happens on Shopify, where Whence stops, in the Whence demo. Fictional store, demonstration data.

Faithful, not approximate

The page is rebuilt as the visitor saw it, with their scrolling, their hesitations and their clicks in the right order.

  • Everything is reconstructed from the document itself, so dynamic content and single-page navigation replay correctly.
  • Jump to the moment that matters rather than sitting through four minutes of browsing.
  • Open a session from anywhere. Every figure in the product carries the sessions behind it.
A session replay in Whence: the store page as the visitor saw it, with their cursor, a playback bar, and beside it the visitor's location, device, source and an AI summary of the visit.

Captured during a visit

  • Page structure full
  • Scrolling sampled
  • Mouse movement sampled
  • Clicks and taps full
  • Navigation full
  • Errors full
  • Form contents never

Watch someone who is still there

Live following opens a visit in progress and keeps up with it as the person browses, a few seconds behind.

  • See the hesitation as it happens, not the next morning when the decision is already made.
  • An optional sound when a visitor arrives, for the days you want to watch the store rather than the dashboard.
  • Follow from the visitor list and drop back out without losing your place.

One person, not a scatter of visits

Return visits are gathered into a single file, so you can see the whole approach rather than a disconnected sequence of arrivals.

  • Every visit in order, with its source, its length and what it produced.
  • A readable name built from a technical identifier alone, stable across visits, revealing nothing about who the person is.
  • Returning visitors are marked, because the second visit rarely means the same thing as the first.

Thirty ways to narrow it down

Filters combine, and any combination can be saved as a segment you reopen in one click.

  • Answer real questions: visitors from ChatGPT, on mobile, who reached checkout and left.
  • Save what you look at weekly instead of rebuilding it each time.
  • Every segment is a list of sessions, so the answer is always watchable.

What is recorded, and what never is

Not a setting you remember to switch on. The masking happens in the browser, before anything is sent. What identifies a person is kept apart, only with consent, and you can switch it off.

  • Every input masked in the recording. What someone types never appears in a replay.
  • Passwords and cards never read: fields whose name or type suggests a password, a card or a security code are skipped outright.
  • Identity, with consent. Once a visitor allows statistics cookies, Whence keeps the email, phone number and name they type into your forms, and what Klaviyo knows about them if they allow marketing. You can turn this off in Settings.
  • Block any element by adding a class to it, and it never enters a recording.
  • Consent respected. Recording can be held until your banner grants it, and starts without a reload when it does.
  • Export and deletion built in, with an audit trail.

In the browser

  • Field contents in replays masked
  • Passwords never read
  • Card numbers never read
  • Email, phone, name kept with consent
  • Street address not kept
  • Identity capture can be turned off

What sessions here do not do

  • No mobile app recording. The tracker records web pages, not native applications.
  • History is bounded by your plan. Sessions are deleted at the end of the retention window, and shortening that window is deliberate rather than reversible.
